The Portiuncula plenary indulgence, also known as the "Pardon of Assisi," is a special grace granted by the Catholic Church. It allows the faithful to receive a plenary indulgence—the remission of all temporal punishment due to sin—on the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula, which is celebrated on August 2.

History of the Indulgence

The indulgence is rooted in the life of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1216, St. Francis, while praying at the Portiuncula chapel—a small chapel he had restored—had a vision of Jesus and Mary. He asked for an indulgence for all those who visited the church with a contrite heart. Pope Honorius III granted this request, and over time, the privilege was extended. Initially, it was only for the Portiuncula chapel itself, but it was later expanded to include all Franciscan churches and eventually to all parish churches worldwide.

The indulgence is seen as an extraordinary act of God's mercy, demonstrating a desire to free people from the temporal punishments that remain even after their sins have been forgiven.

How to Obtain the Indulgence

To receive the Portiuncula plenary indulgence, a person must fulfill a series of specific conditions, typically within a window of time around the feast day (usually from noon on August 1 to midnight on August 2). The conditions are:

 * Visit a Church: You must devoutly visit a Catholic church. This could be the Portiuncula chapel itself (now located within the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, Italy), a Franciscan church, or any parish church.

 * Sacramental Confession: You must go to Confession within about 20 days before or after the indulgenced act.

 * Receive Holy Communion: You must receive Holy Communion.

 * Pray for the Pope's Intentions: You must pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. This can be done by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary.

 * Recite Prayers: While in the church, you must recite the Our Father and the Creed.

 * Be Detached from Sin: You must have the interior disposition of being completely detached from sin, even venial sin.

It's important to remember that a plenary indulgence can only be gained once a day. The indulgence can be applied to oneself or to a soul in Purgatory.
